Mr Stewart, from Kiama, celebrated 50 years of truck driving with Cleary Bros on Monday.

Before he started working there, aged 26, he owned his own truck for several years and also drove for other companies.

So Mr Stewart reckons it's been about 55 years all up.

But he's happy to sit in the passenger seat at home and let Helen drive.

"We share the driving if we're together," Mr Stewart said.

"She likes to drive. We went to Queensland a few years ago and she drove all the way there and all the way back - I was just the co-pilot."

The 76-year-old has always been interested in trucks and reckons it's the "diesel in your veins" that has kept him driving for so long.

And in an era where people change jobs all the time, he knows 50 years with the same company is more than a little unusual.

"They've been pretty good to me and it was fairly close to home," he said of his half-century with Cleary Bros. "It was just somewhere good to work and I just kept plugging along with the help of my family. My wife, she's been working for me for over 50 years and never got paid for it. I get paid for what I do."

He drives semi-trailers every day but doesn't have plans to get behind the wheel of anything bigger.

"I never got as far as B-doubles," he said.

"When you turn 70, you've got to go for tests for B-doubles so I just stuck with semi-trailers."

Mr Stewart said his 50 years had included plenty of great moments having a laugh with workmates - and a few scary times as well. Such as being in the cabin when his truck rolled over at Bombo.

"It wasn't my fault, the front axle broke and it tipped over and all the sand fell out," he said. "When Brian Cleary came along he asked what happened and I told him. I said 'take a photo of it'. He said 'I'll take one when it's fixed'. I was fine. It had landed on the driver's side. All I could think of was fire and I was panicking, trying to get out. I think they reckoned I did more damage to the cab that way than when it rolled over."
