Sharon Banach can’t wait to again lead the Keiraville Public School team at this weekend’s Illawarra Relay For Life at Kerryn McCann Athletic Centre in Gwynneville.
The school administrative officer said everybody was looking forward to 24 hours of fun, entertainment and exercise.
Supporting the Cancer Council has been a priority for Ms Banach ever since she lost her father to bowel cancer in 2002.
‘‘I think Relay For Life is a fantastic event for families because, as well as raising an awareness of cancer and having a focus on healthy living, it is just so much fun for the kids,’’ she said.
‘‘Kids are affected too when they lose someone they love to this disease, so the relay is also a way for them to learn that we, as the Wollongong community, are doing something to fight back against cancer.
‘‘Last year my niece and nephews who were 11 and 12 wrote beautiful messages to their ‘‘Poppy’’ on a candle HOPE bag. I think it was really good for them to be able to do that and to read the hundreds of other messages lining the track so they know that they are not alone.’’
Illawarra Relay For Life committee co-chairwoman Maree Kerr said there was time to register online – many families register on the day.
‘‘Although the event runs for 24 hours, participants can come and go as they like,’’ she said.
Money raised from the Beaton Park event on September 20-21 will be used for keeping vital support services for cancer patients in the Illawarra operating as well as supporting cancer research.
