Neil Reilly retained his role as deputy mayor, holding off a challenge from veteran councillor Warren Steel and independent councillor Mark Way.
The method of voting for deputy mayor was a preferential ballot, with no indication given of which way councillors voted.
Cr Petschler said he appreciated how councillors had worked together over the past 12 months.
‘‘The collaborative way that the council has worked is a credit to you all,’’ Cr Petschler said.
Cr Petschler served as Kiama Municipal Council’s general manager between 1987 and 2001.
He stood successfully for council in 2008 and was elected deputy mayor in 2011.
At the Kiama council elections in 2012, Cr Petschler’s team recorded 28.9per cent of first-preference votes.
