The Canberra product said the ACT had always been a breeding ground for quality cricketers, but now there was a belief it has a genuine pathway through to the top levels of the sport.

While Cricket ACT is forming an alliance with country NSW to push for admittance into the 2015-16 one-day domestic competition, Bevan felt the popularity of Twenty20 cricket meant establishing a Canberra team in the  BBL was the next important step.

There has been talk of Sydney Thunder bringing a home game to Manuka Oval, but Bevan thought Canberrans needed a team to  call their own.

He felt having a team would help continue the game's growth in Canberra, especially with a big summer of cricket coming up.

"I think the venue has always been there [at Manuka for top-class cricket], there's some great facilities, both playing and practice-wise," Bevan said.

"There's a good opportunity with the advent and increase of the popularity of the domestic Twenty20 competition, there's going to be some good opportunities for Canberra cricket moving forward and a chance for Australian cricket to expand the competition.

"I think it's really important for Cricket ACT to have this exposure on a number of different levels to host these games and to some stage down the track to play a larger part in Australian cricket."

The ACT government has been investing heavily in Manuka Oval, including installing lights, with the view to getting more top-level cricket there.

Australia played it's first ever game in Canberra last year and this summer will be a smorgasbord, with the Aussies playing South Africa in a one-day international, the BBL grand final and three games for the Cricket World Cup.

The emergence of Manuka on the national stage has coincided with Canberrans getting contracts around the country.

Queanbeyan product Brad Haddin is a chance of becoming Australia's 45th Test captain next month, while Ryan Carters and Jason Behrendorff are just a couple of the Canberra players plying their trade around the country.

"Canberra has always been a decent breeding ground and at some point in time Canberra cricketers have started to believe there's a pathway for them to top-level cricket and were prepared to chase it," Bevan said.

"It's certainly more concrete now with Canberra players coming through and their ability to break through into high-level cricket."

Bevan is also doing his bit in developing Canberra's future stars.

As the coach of Sydney grade club Easts, Bevan will help oversee the development of talented ACT Comets batsman Matt Condon, who will play his first pre-season game for his new club this weekend.

Bevan said Condon's quick rise had made him highly sought-after by several clubs.

"He seems to have had a rapid learning curve and performance curve - he hasn't been around that long and in that time he's performed really well and moved quickly through the ranks at Cricket ACT, that's the thing that struck me as being a really good point," he said.

"I've heard some really good reports about him and we were looking to strengthen our batting at Easts."
