A number of phone outlets in the Wollongong CBD reported that crowds gathered outside their stores in the small hours, and they did a roaring trade throughout the day.
Illawarra Telstra general manager Tricia Wilson said customers started queueing at the company's Wollongong Central Shopping Centre store from 4am.
By 8am, when the store opened, Ms Wilson estimated there were about 150 people waiting in line.
"We've had a very busy day," she said.
"There have been queues all day for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. It shows just how keen people are and how they really embrace new technology."
