The 42-year-old driver had had a fight with his partner, a 41-year-old woman who left a house in Reilly Street, Lurnea, to go for a walk about 12:30am.
The man followed her in his car, from which police later seized a samurai sword and replica gun.
The man demanded his partner get in, then left the car to try to force her inside.
When the woman screamed, several people approached from a nearby house, one of whom was then reportedly punched by the man.
The bystanders returned to a house where other residents had now gathered in the front yard.
"The man allegedly drove the vehicle towards the home," police said in a statement.
"The car mounted the kerb, crossed the footpath and went through the front brick fence towards the house where a group of 15 people had gathered."
They managed to jump out of the way and only one resident was injured, receiving minor cuts when he tried to grab the car's window to stop the vehicle.
The driver reversed and drove away. He was found by police a short time later at his address, sitting in the front seat.
He was taken to Liverpool Hospital with a foot injury and remained under guard.
Police were expected to lay charges upon his release.
