Dean Dobbin, 43, was due to be sentenced on July 18 on multiple drug and stolen property offences but failed to turn up, prompting a warrant to be issued for his arrest.

He was picked up by police in Wollongong on Sunday afternoon, after trying to conceal his identity by pulling his jacket over his face.

Facing court on Monday, Dobbin was told he’d been convicted of the charges in his absence.

Police facts before the court said Dobbin came to police attention in mid 2012 during investigations by Operation Danville, formed to look at drug supply and stolen property offences being committed in Wollongong and Lake Illawarra commands.

The court heard an undercover officer met Dobbin nine times between July 5 and September 11 in 2012 looking to buy the drug ice.

On four occasions the operative successfully purchased 0.1 grams of ice for $100 each time, while on two further occasions the transaction didn’t progress.

During the other meetings, Dobbin gave the undercover officer stolen goods, including a laptop computer, hard drive, modems, speakers, computer routers and infra-red surveillance cameras.

The court heard the duo would mostly meet at Dobbin’s Myuna Way home, however at times they would drive to other homes in the Wollongong area where Dobbin would source the drugs.

Dobbin sought release on bail in court on Monday, but it was denied by Magistrate Mark Douglass.

He said Dobbin was likely facing a lengthy jail sentence.

The case was adjourned to this Friday for sentencing.
