Firefighters responded to a blaze in the roof of Kiama's historic terrace houses on Tuesday night.
Restaurant patrons from Ritzy Gritz Mexican restaurant were evacuated in the middle of dinner after the fire was spotted in a tree around the back of the 40 Collins Street properties.
A staff member saw flames at the back of the heritage listed building around 7pm and alerted other staff, who managed to clear the restaurant and alert the fire brigade.
Ambulance officers in the vicinity also saw the flames and were quickly on the scene.
The fire spread into the roof of the restaurant and the neighbouring candle shop, however multiple Fire and Rescue NSW crews quickly arrived on the scene to avert serious damage.
The Terrace Houses will celebrate their 150th anniversary next year.
