The most effective is the northbound camera on the F6 at Gwynneville.

For red-light cameras, the Corrimal and Burelli Street camera had the greatest effect in reducing injuries but was also the only camera location in the Illawarra to record a fatality.

The worst at stopping crashes is the red-light camera at the intersection of Windang Road and Boronia Avenue.

Each year the Centre for Road Safety conducts a review of all red-light and fixed speed cameras in NSW.

The review uses a range of criteria, including fatalities, injuries, crashes and casualty cost and compares the most recent five-year period, with the five years prior to installation to assess the effectiveness of all cameras.

Those deemed not to have any proven road safety benefit will be removed. The review found that all red-light and fixed speed cameras were effective.

All speed cameras recorded reductions in each of the criteria, with the  exception of the northbound camera on the F6 at Gwynneville, which showed a 29 per cent increase in crashes, from seven to nine.

However, across the bulk of the criteria, the Memorial Drive cameras saw the lowest levels of improvement.

There was a zero per cent reduction in fatalities, with one recorded in both five-year periods, only a 7 per cent reduction in injuries, a 13 per cent fall in crashes and just a 2 per cent drop in casualty costs.

At the top end, the northbound camera on the F6 at Gwynneville recorded an 81 per cent reduction in injuries (from 32 down to six) and more than halved the number of crashes, from 37 to 16.

The cameras at Princes Highway, Bulli and North Wollongong and the F6 southbound all recorded a 100 per cent reduction in fatalities - from one to zero.

By far and away the most effective red-light camera for reducing injuries is at Corrimal and Burelli streets - a massive 91 per cent fall from 20 to 1.

The least effective at stopping crashes was the Windang Road and Boronia Avenue camera, which saw a 92 per cent increase in accidents.
