Kaine McFadgeon, alias Kaine O’Brian, is accused of striking a man in the knee with a pitchfork and then stabbing another in the torso and neck, inflicting life-threatening injuries.
The 42-year-old was denied bail in Port Kembla Local Court on Thursday, where he had been granted bail for unrelated matters the previous day, just hours before the alleged attack.
Tensions over a woman sparked a series of angry text messages allegedly sent by McFadgeon to another man, according to facts before the court.
The man and three others went to McFadgeon’s Albion Park Rail home to discuss the matter, instead an altercation erupted after two men jumped the back fence, the court heard.
One of the men threw a shovel at McFadgeon, who then returned fire with the pitchfork, police will allege.
The four men ran from the scene, but McFadgeon caught up and clashed with two of them, striking one in the knee with the pitchfork and stabbing another in the chest, abdomen and neck with a 20cm-long knife, according to police facts.
A witness then allegedly saw McFadgeon standing over the critically injured man holding the pitchfork to his throat.
Prosecutor sergeant Shannon Ryan said there appeared to have been "some intimate triangle of personalities that the accused has taken exception to," and a vendetta or threats made prior to Wednesday’s incident.
In opposing bail, he said there was a risk McFadgeon may fail to appear in court, and also a risk to the alleged victims.
Defence solicitor Stewart Holt told the court his client had been at his own home when the four men came to confront him, knocking down a fence panel to get in the back yard.
He said McFadgeon would comply with any bail conditions imposed and was able to post a $500 surety.
Magistrate Mark Douglass denied McFadgeon bail and adjourned the matter to November 19 when he will face charges of assault occassioning grievous bodily harm and wounding a person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
