Kiama council and officers from Lake Illawarra police will join forces to minimise delays and help prevent gridlocks that have plagued the township on previous weekends.
In the past, drivers have attempted to avoid traffic backed up along the Princes Highway due to roadwork delays at Gerringong and congestion on the Kiama bends.
This long weekend Lake Illawarra Police Command advise against using Jamberoo and Kiama as a shortcut.
Sergeant Jason Harrison said there would be a strong police presence patrolling the municipality monitoring speed and dangerous driving.
Crime prevention officer Mark Scott said the weekend was bound to be a busy one on the roads.
"We will also ask people to be patient as they travel through the command over the weekend,'' acting sergeant Scott said
"Obviously, being a long weekend we expect congested traffic, also it's the end of school holidays, the grand final and the weather is warmer - seeing more people out and about. All of those things combined can cause problems for us.
"There are going to be delays - particularly with the work around the Gerringong bypass, That's going to be tested to capacity this weekend, so we ask people to be patient.''
Council and the Police urge visitors to plan their trip:
- carry sufficient food and water
- use public toilets/rest stops before they reach the Kiama area (there are no public toilets along the Kiama bends)
- plan for extended delays during peak periods.
In 2013, seven people died on NSW roads on the Labour Day long weekend, while 4924 drivers were detected speeding and 399 charged with drink-driving.
NSW Police Force, Deputy Commissioner Catherine Burn, said the need for vigilance was high this weekend.
“Speed, tiredness, seatbelts, drink-driving and distraction – combined with more motorists on our roads can be deadly,'' she said.
Police will target motorists speeding, not wearing seatbelts, drink and drug driving, as well as those fatigued and distracted.
Double demerits will be in force for all speeding, seatbelt and motorcycle helmet offences throughout this period.
