The 69-year-old man from Frenchs Forest was riding his bike along a service road at Mt Hope about midday Saturday when he hit the emu.

A friend of the rider, a 55-year-old man from Werombi, who was following, told police the rider was thrown about 30m.

He rendered assistance and called NSW Ambulance Paramedics to the scene.

The man’s condition deteriorated and he died a short time later at Lake Cargelligo District Hospital.

A report is being prepared for the information of the Coroner.

The emu died at the scene.
