A woman who allegedly attempted to abduct a toddler from her mother's car in Sydney's west has been referred for a psychiatric assessment.

About 1pm on Saturday a mother took took her three-year-old girl to her car, which was parked on Nungeroo Avenue, Jamisontown.
Police said when she turned her back Irene Rose Chen, 31, approached the car, took the child out of her seat and began to walk away.
The girl's mother ran after Ms Chen and took her child back.
Ms Chen allegedly became aggressive. She was detained by members of the public while police were called.
She was arrested and charged with take or detain person with intent to obtain advantage and intimidation.
In Parramatta Bail Court on Sunday Ms Chen was referred to Westmead Hospital for a psychiatric assessment.
Police said neither the child nor her mother was injured in the incident.
