On Monday night, Cr Merrin will table a notice of motion urging the council to compile a report on the cost and success of dog activity parks in neighbouring Shellharbour City and Kiama councils.
Cr Merrin was unable to be reached for comment on Sunday but said in an earlier statement that the dog activity parks had been popular in the other areas.
“Shellharbour council, for example, has provided residents with a safe, fenced and landscaped dog activity park, complete with ‘dog agility equipment’, water sources and picnic shelter,’’ Cr Merrin said. “These parks do not cost a lot to install. With Shellharbour’s population about a third of Wollongong’s, there is no reason why we should not have at least one similar dog park in each of the three wards of Wollongong.”
Her motion will urge the council to investigate the size and number of parks in the other areas in relation to population, their level of use, costs and potential locations in each Wollongong ward.
“There’s been a lot of argument about dogs on beaches but there is also strong agreement that people want to see proper park facilities for dogs. I don’t want us to forget that this policy is also about dogs in parks,” she said.
