It comes as no great surprise that Jake Lavalle is now a junior black belt in reflex combative martial arts.

Having grown up with black belt instructors as parents, Jake was destined to achieve great things in martial arts.

But the 11-year-old's sporting talents spread further than martial arts.

For the past two years he has represented Football South Coast's representative squad (SAP) and is gunning to play for the South Coast Wolves this coming season, with hopes to one day play professional football.

Jake is also a gun on the athletics track and was named athletic champion for 2014 at Good Samaritan Catholic Primary School at Fairy Meadow.

His impressive performances included winning the 100 metre race and long jump, and placing second in the 200m race for his age group.

The Fairy Meadow youngster also recently showed up more experienced competitors when he won a gold medal No Gi (rash top and shorts) event in the 10-12 years division of the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Oceanic Championships.

Jake also claimed a bronze in the Gi event of the championships, held at Ryde Aquatic and Leisure Centre on September 28.

Dominic Lavalle said his son had done extremely well against some of the best jiu jitsu competitors in the country.

Dominic and his wife Rosanna have run Reflex Martial Arts Centre in Wollongong since 1996.

"Jake has been training in martial arts since the age of three. He has trained very hard over the years and deserves the success that has come his way," Lavalle said.

Earlier this month the youngster became the latest Lavalle to achieve a black belt, joining parents Dominic and Rosanna and older sister Alyssa.

"I'm very proud to have the Lavalle family as all black belts," Dominic said.

Jake's training regime includes three kickboxing sessions and two Brazilian jiu jitsu sessions a week.

During the soccer season he also does football training three times a week and cuts back his martial arts to two sessions a week.

"It has never been an issue for Jake to come to training three times a week as he realises how important discipline is in helping shape a person's mental and physical self," Dominic said.
