‘‘You drive around and see a lot around the streets,’’ said Lloyd Powell, president of the Oak Flats Dads Committee, the organisers of the event.
‘‘It is like being back in the 50s and 60s.’’
On Sunday, October 26, the billy carts return to Central Avenue for the second Oak Flats Billy Cart Derby.
Mr Powell said the initial idea for the Oak Flats derby stemmed from a group of fathers keen to get involved with their kids and Oak Flats Public School, as well as engage the community and highlight what a great place Oak Flats is to grow up.
More than 100 entries have been received for this year’s event, with registration days also held at Balarang and Mt Warrigal primary schools.
Some will use the derby as a warm-up event for the Port Kembla Billy Cart Derby on November 15, however most of the carts have been designed with the ‘‘flats’’ of Oak Flats in mind, rather than the steep hill of Wentworth Street, Port Kembla.
Mr Powell said a variety of community groups have come on board for this year’s event and it is hoped to incorporate next year’s derby into a school fete event.
The Lake Illawarra Police will again have a presence in the derby with a special cart built for the day and they will also bring the Police Force’s 2014 Porsche 911 Carrera, which is based in Sydney.
More information is available at the derby’s Facebook page.
