The ASP World Tour event winner said she had been looking forward to returning to the Illawarra for Sunday's race.
"The countdown starts when you're away and I'm just looking forward to getting home and pressing the reset button," she said.
While a 12-kilometre run isn't considered a rest for some, Fitzgibbons said she enjoyed the peace and calm that came with running.
"It's always really good being on the course; the atmosphere is really positive and the course showcases how beautiful our area is," she said.
Cotton On Run Wollongong offers three events: a 12-kilometre run, a six-kilometre run and a walking event for families.
Minor injuries sustained on the world tour could keep the pro surfer from running the longer course.
"I've had a few injuries coming off back-to-back events so if I can't run the 12 kilometres, I'll just cruise around the six kilometres," she said.
Returning as a race ambassador for the second year, Fitzgibbons urged all Illawarra locals to take part in the run.
"I'd like to see more Wollongongians take part and whether you've trained or not, just go at your own pace," she said.
All proceeds go towards revamping the Illawarra Shoalhaven Children's Assessment Unit.
Last-minute registrations can be made from 6am at the start line on Burelli Street.
