Ben Low, Venturer Leader at 1st Balgownie Scout Group, recognised the possibilities posed by the 45-metre landmark, and convinced authorities to open it to public abseiling on the November 29-30 weekend.
‘‘As leaders, we’re always trying to think of ways to challenge people,’’ Mr Low said.
‘‘Council chambers is the highest commercial building in Wollongong. It’s ideal for abseiling because it’s got one corner with a really nice, smooth, uninterrupted edge - there’s no windows, no patios or verandas that are going to get in the way.
‘‘As it turns out, they have a window washing unit on top, so it made the set-up really easy.’’
Members of the public will be able to abseil down the building for a registration fee of $50.
Abseilers will also be encouraged to collect sponsorship, with proceeds to go to the Scouts and Camp Quality.
Mr Low said he won approval to run the event after he approached individual councillors with his idea.
He is hopeful it will become the subject of dares.
‘‘If you’ve ever wanted to throw someone off the side of a building; now’s the time,’’ Mr Low said.
