One street back from the popular Corrimal Street, the small Marr Street is comprised largely of residential homes with a handful of walk-up unit blocks.
Yet there will be a new addition at 5 Marr Street next year - a seven-storey luxury apartment block known as Marquee.
The complex will have 21 three-bedroom apartments and four two-bedroom apartments.
They will range in price from $649,000 for two bedroom configurations to $1.35 million, for the apartments with the larger floor space on the top three levels.
The development site currently has three separate houses on it, which will be eventually demolished with work on the apartments expected to start next June.
Ray White North Beach Wollongong director Fady Saad, who launched Marquee’s marketing campaign last weekend, said the apartments would be ready for residents to move in by the middle of 2016.
The development plans are lodged with Wollongong City Council and the apartments have begun selling off the plan.
‘‘Location wise, it’s one of the quietest streets in the area,’’ Mr Saad said.
‘‘That combination of tranquility and convenience has been one of the major points of inquiry from people.
‘‘They love the fact it’s not too busy yet it’s still close to the harbour, the beach and to town.’’
Mr Saad said he had been inundated with inquiries in the past week.
Many inquiries had been from Illawarra residents familiar with the street yet there had also been international interest and calls from prospective Sydney buyers.
Mr Saad said the Marquee apartments were being developed by GI Developments Pty Ltd and were designed by architectural firm ADM Architects to maximise the mountain and ocean views.
Every apartment had been designed around an oversized north-facing balcony or courtyard, which will flow into generous interior open plan living areas, he said.
A security basement will have lock-up garages for two, three or four cars, depending on the size of the apartment.
