She believes her parents' musical tastes fed her adult love of the '50s and all the fashion, dancing and rock'n'roll that comes with the era.
McCarthy and friend Elaine Stewart, who runs Bulli clothing store My 50s Closet, are the brains behind the Rock n' Vintage Roll Festival - a celebration of all things retro.
The festival, to be held on November 2, follows the inaugural event held earlier this year, which attracted more than 1000 patrons.
McCarthy said the pair was "blown away" by the attendance but believed it was a sure sign of the region's thirst for nostalgia.
"We've found people can either dabble or they become completely engrossed in the era - it takes over their life," she laughed.
"There's definitely an interest out there from a variety of social and cultural groups; there's people who are just really interested in that 50s Americana stuff.
"I think there's so much to enjoy in the dancing and the fashion, it's really fun."
The spring festival, to be held at Ryan's Hotel in Thirroul, will include a host of market stalls, vintage cars and live music, performed across two spaces.
Prizes will also be handed out for best-dressed on the day - an event McCarthy said was generally well-embraced by visitors.
"It was about 50-50 at the last festival," she said.
"Some people are like us and they dress in vintage every day so they love the chance to come along in their gear but we have people there in jeans and thongs too.
"It's a real mix, which is great - we love to see different people."
Guests will also be encouraged to jive along to the rockabilly tunes, provided by headliners No Brakes - a favourite activity of McCarthy's.
"I met some people who did rock'n'roll dancing and I was at a bit of a loose end so I went along to a class," she said.
"I've never looked back, I love it. I go to two or three lessons a week and all the social events.
"I just love the dancing and the music."
The festival will be held from 10am to 6pm.
Entry is by gold coin donation.
A pin-up competition will be held the night before at Ryan's Hotel.
