Senior HSC marker and Oak Flats High School teacher Richard McMullen advised students to learn the syllabus rather then rely on a memorised essay.

"Students shouldn't have pre-prepared answers because they'll be asked to put two parts of syllabus together, there's hardly ever a question on just one part of the syllabus," he said.

"It's much better to have a thorough knowledge and to be able to make connections to the different parts of the syllabus."

Besides knowing the content, understanding the question is crucial, according to Mr McMullen.

"In the exam the most important thing is understanding the directive term in the question, it's an indication of the depth required for the answer," he said.

Oak Flats student Jake O'Dea prepared for his Business Studies exam by doing past papers.

"I practised writing business reports and essays, making branches of what I would talk about if I got asked a type of question," he said

Students can boost their marks by keeping up with the latest developments in business.
