The $7million, two-storey complex was approved by Wollongong City Council in 2011 but stalled in January last year because of remediation works.
However, earthmovers and other equipment have now arrived on site, and a Woolworths spokeswoman said the supermarket giant was hoping to open the 24-hour Bulli store by Christmas 2015.
She would not detail what had caused such a lengthy delay, but said the company had ‘‘undertaken remediation works to the site, and [was] working to finalise detailed design and obtain all relevant construction certificates and approvals over the last two years’’.
Signs asking for expressions of interest for five specialty stores were also recently erected.
According to the Woolworths website, the company is looking for businesses such as a chemist, newsagency, bakery, butcher, restaurant, feast food outlet, coffee shop or hair and beauty salon.
