The plaza is being built in Holborn Park on the Lake Illawarra foreshore and is part of a plan to transform the area into family-friendly outdoor activity zone.
Along with a modern plaza-style skate park, Wollongong City Council will also install a basketball court, picnic tables, a set of outdoor gym equipment and new playground equipment.
The new play space will include climbing nets, swings, trampolines and water play equipment.
The total cost of the project is $1.1million, with the skate plaza costing $700,000.
The plaza is being built by Melbourne action sports construction firm Convic, which built the Helensburgh skate park.
Convic has built skate facilities throughout Australia and New Zealand, and the world’s biggest skate precinct in Shanghai.
