The men set sail in pre-dawn darkness before their boat lost propulsion going over a reef several metres out at sea, about 5am.
They abandoned ship and swum ashore.
Marine Rescue attempted to salvage the men’s 4.5-metre, aluminium vessel, but found it washed onto rocks near Bellambi Pool, in a position too unsafe for rescuers to reach.
Marine Rescue Port Kembla public relations officer Tom Dragutinovich said a 2.5-metre swell contributed to the poor conditions at sea.
‘‘It was deceiving - a good day onshore but a bad day offshore,’’ he said.
‘‘[The fishermen] ended up in trouble very quickly.’’
