Wollongong City takes on a whole new perspective from the top of an 11-storey building.

The CBD seems smaller from 45 metres up but none of that mattered for Scouts Ashton and Haydn Low who abseiled down the Wollongong City Council building in Burelli Street - the city's tallest commercial building - on October 21.

The 13-year-old brothers, both members of 1st Balgownie Scouts, completed the abseil with the help of Scouts leaders with many years of abseiling experience, including their dad Ben Low.

They were taking part in a practice run ahead of the Over the Edge challenge on November 29 and 30.

Balgownie Scouts hopes to convince 180 members of the public to abseil down the north-east facade of the council building.

Registration costs $50 and participants are encouraged to also raise at least $150 each, with the proceeds going to Scouts and Camp Quality.

Balgownie Venturers leader Mr Low said some people had already registered, including the council's infrastructure and works director Mike Hyde.

"There are those who reckon it's awesome and abseiled as a kid and then there are quite a few who are doing it as a challenge," he said.

"I'm sure there are people who've sponsored others who just want to throw someone off a building."

The funds raised will help five Balgownie Scouts get to the World Scout Jamboree in Japan next year, and also support Camp Quality.

Mr Low said six Scout leaders from troops at Austinmer, Albion Park, Baulkham Hills, Keiraville and Balgownie will be in charge of the abseil, all qualified in SIS10 outdoor recreation.
