Martin had spent six previous seasons at the club before pursuing a contract in Europe over the off-season.

He was unable to secure a deal overseas and will now rejoin the Hawks backcourt.

The Hawks already have four guards on their roster with imports Gary Ervin and Jahii Carson as well as local products Tyson Demos and Dom Cooks.

But Martin’s ability to play both guard positions and his knowledge of coach Gordie McLeod’s system is expected to come as a boost.

“To have a player of Rhys’ calibre and ability who fits straight into our system, ready and available was an opportunity we felt we had to take,'' Hawks General Manager Kim Welch said.

“Rhys brings the knowledge and experience needed to our backcourt  to challenge and compete with the leading clubs, and I want to ensure we do all we can as a club to give ourselves the best opportunity to compete with the league’s best.''

A 1-5 start to the season has prompted the Hawks to make changes to their roster just three weeks into the campaign.

It was announced yesterday that Dave Gruber had been released from the club after making only one appearance to start the season.

Martin’s arrival will take the Hawks signed contingent back up to 11 players.

He was selected to play for the Australian Boomers in the four game Sino Challenge series against China.
