If the name doesn’t ring a bell, it’s the golden girl of Illawarra hockey, Casey Eastham, who married long-time partner Scott Sablowski at a ceremony in Bali in earlier this year.
It was a stellar year for the 25-year-old, winning World Cup silver and Commonwealth Games gold.
She also shared the player of the World Cup title with Anna Flanagan.
Sablowski and Flanagan accepted their awards via video link as they’re both overseas competing in the Dutch league.
Kookaburras captain Mark Knowles was rewarded for his role in Australia’s World Cup and Commonwealth Games triumphs with the Kookaburras player of the year award.
Defender Knowles also shared the team’s Player of the World Cup award with striker Eddie Ockenden at a Hockey Australia gala function in Perth on Wednesday night.
The 30-year-old skipper paid tribute to his team, who highlighted their stellar year with a devastating 6-1 win over hosts The Netherlands in the World Cup final then claimed Commonwealth gold in Glasgow.
‘‘I think the way we played was just truly exceptional,’’ Knowles said.
‘‘To hear (people) say how amazing it was to watch Australia, and how relentless we were, was a real honour to hear.’’
Casey Sablowski (formerly Eastham) won the Hockeyroos Player of the Year after a season in which the Hockeyroos claimed World Cup silver and Commonwealth gold.
Chris Ciriello (25 goals) collected the Kookaburras’ top scorer award while Jodie Kenny (23 goals) took that Hockeyroos honour.
The night also featured tributes to World Cup-winning men’s coach Ric Charlesworth and Kookaburras retirees Liam De Young and Rob Hammond, who made more than 560 appearances between them and won the World Cup twice each. AAP
