Residents of Strata Avenue have pulled out their scariest gear to mark Halloween, decorating their houses and dressing up to ‘‘trick or treat’’ along the street.
Debbie Lean, whose cousin Kathy Southall is the brains behind the street transformation, says the annual event is a highlight for her kids.
‘‘My little one ran into my room on Thursday morning and said ‘it’s Halloween tomorrow’, they’re just all so excited,’’ she said.
‘‘You just see the happiness on their faces, they have an absolute ball and it’s so great that the whole street has got involved.’’
Ms Southall spends more than a month preparing for the occasion, making everything from cauldrons to cobwebs for her house.
‘‘She has more stuff on her house for Halloween than she does for Christmas,’’ Ms Lean laughed.
‘‘She just loves the idea of Halloween and seeing the kids laughing as they go from house to house, it’s really wonderful.’’
Adults also get in on the fun, donning costumes for the evening.
Ms Lean shrugged off complaints about Halloween being a ‘‘Americanised, commercialised holiday’’, noting anything that brought a smile to a child’s face was okay by her.
‘‘Who can begrudge children from dressing up once a year and having fun?’’ she said.
‘‘Sure, there’s lollies involved but we make sure the children trick or treat in a safe environment - it’s just about going together and having fun.’’
