Wests resume at 3-155, leading by 18 after bowling out Wollongong for 137 on day one.
New signings Olly Thompson with 5-36 and ex-Wollongong wicketkeeper Dirk Cameron (70) led the way, with Wests skipper Josh Hill saying his club will press on in pursuit of maximum points.
"We've put ourselves in a good position and if we can bat well and establish a good lead, who knows what will happen," Hill said.
"But having first innings points by the end of day one is good reward for a solid day with ball and bat."
Wollongong have lost their opening two games and were let down with the bat, with Sameer Murthy (24) the top scorer.
The four other games have yet to deliver a first innings result, though Helensburgh, Keira and Balgownie are well placed heading into day two.
Helensburgh resume at 1-57, chasing Port Kembla's 176 at King George Oval.
Port recovered from 7-86 but the Burgh are in poll position to put pressure on the home side's batting in their second innings.
At Uni Oval, visitors Balgownie still have a 301-run lead and are in a dominant position against University.
The Students (0-36) misread a lifeless pitch and sent Bally into bat and are left to chase 9-337.
Dean Merola (95) top scored for the Magpies on day one.
Premiers Keira are in strong position to post their first win of the season, with Northern Districts 2-8 chasing the Lions' 190 at Hollymount Oval.
Darcy McMahon took both Keira wickets late on day one, leaving the Butchers with plenty to do to also claim their first win for the season.
At Reed Park, Corrimal have been set 225 to beat Dapto in a battle between clubs with premiership aspirations.
