The tiger, who turned 13 on Saturday, was treated to some special treats, including a tiger-friendly birthday cake and a party with the zoo’s guests.
Visitors shared the birthday love with free face painting for the kids.
Kato was born in October 2001 in Sydney but soon became a superstar at Queensland’s Dreamworld, featuring in the Tiger Island hand feeding and milking demonstrations.
He retired from show biz in December 2012 and took up a new home at Symbio.
Symbio owner John Radnige said Kato was a big tiger, weighing in at 150kg, but was very happy.
“He can often be seen strutting around … he’s quite often flat on his back with paws pointing to the sky, completely at peace and crashed out,” he said.
“He is one of the most affectionate animals in our collection…”
A tiger in captivity generally lives about 25 years.
