They have both had a lot of exposure this week. And both are in grave danger of missing the point.

Dear Kimberly.

She tried to "break the internet" with her nudie curves – figuring that way less is way more when it comes to mind-blowing sexiness.  But while her form in Paper magazine was indisputably impressive, instead of awe, the web responded with guffaws. Promptly photoshopping the back end of a horse to her behind.

(Didn't Kardashian realise that when it comes to staying credible, baby oil is not the way to go? More to the point, baby oil has not been cool since the 1980s?)

And then, the dear G20.

As the humidity does strange things to temperaments and hairdos (so much frizz!), world leaders have arrived in Brisbane with as much fanfare as Queensland can manage.

The G20, as Tony Abbott has been fond of telling us, is the most important meeting to have ever been held in Australia. It is also the main international economic event of the international calendar. It trumps the G8, APEC, even CHOGM. Twenty of the keyest (if not the biggest) world economies are talking moolah and related issues. Or as the glossy promo literature says, "growth and resilience". It's all about infrastructure, competition, lowering trade barriers and jobs.

Because of the size and influence of the summit, in the lead up to G20, there has been no shortage of groups and causes with earnest barrows to push about what the meeting should pay more attention to. Apart from the "freelancers" who have variously argued that the agenda include climate change and Ebola and that we all be more generous towards refugees, there are the official G20 "engagement groups".

These have been set up across "key economic and social sectors" to "advise and inform the G20's decisions". The C20 group, which focuses on civil society, has been arguing for "inclusive growth". The L20, with its focus on labour, also wants to see growth that improves inequality around the world. And the Y20, with its focus on young people, wants to see a solution to the 600 million young people around the world who are not in school, training or work. There is also a B20 group for the private sector and a T20 for think tanks and academia.

But amongst all the 20s, there is one major grouping that is not officially engaged. Where is the W20? Where is the group that focuses on women and girls? True, there have been side events. A G(irls)20 event was organised by a Canadian social entrepreneur. And on Sunday, Quentin Bryce and Minister for Women Michaelia Cash will head up a university-organised event entitled, "where are the women at the G20 summit?" Neither event feeds directly into proceedings.

This isn't just a minor gripe. If women are not consciously part of the conversation, then genuine economic growth and resilience won't happen. Women of course make up some 50 per cent of the world's population. But as Oxfam notes in a recent paper, across the G20, they paid less, are over-represented in part-time work, and are discriminated against in the home, in the economy and in institutions. 

If women were paid the same as men – for paid work – it is estimated that the USA's GDP would increase by 9 per cent, the Eurozone's would jump by 13 per cent. In 15 major developing countries, per capita income would go up by 14 per cent by 2020.

One of the biggest gender gaps, however, is in relation to unpaid work. Communities and economies depend on it – from caring for kids, the disabled, sick and elderly, to household work. As Oxfam argues, women "effectively subsidise" the economy with an average of two to five hours more unpaid work than men every day. The dollar sign on this one? Estimates are at between 10 to 50 per cent of GDP.

There are reasonable hopes that this weekend's summit will see leaders set a target to reduce the gender gap by 25 per cent by 2025. But there are not unreasonable concerns that not much will come of it.

In 2012 at the Los Cabos summit, the leaders committed to taking "concrete actions" to overcome the barriers hindering women's full economic and social participation. But there has been little progress since. As the ANU's Susan Harris-Rimmer has observed, "the G20 has been seriously deficient of its recognition of gender issues in the global economy".

Active steps need to be taken. As well as active measurement of how those steps are going.

Amongst all the noise of the weekend – and all the worthy issues – here's hoping the G20 leaders realise that when it comes to women's equality, more is more.
