Kim Kardashian posted a photo on her Instagram account of Hole in the Wall Beach near Bristol Point in Jervis Bay with the caption "Sydney".
A number of Kardashian's 21 million Instagram followers were quick to pick up on her geographical faux pas; Instagram user @kewanaparsons said "as a traditional owner of the area in this photo, this is not Sydney".
Another, @kirstylee984, said "two and a half hours south of Sydney, not even close! When "promoting" please get the place right".
Locals were given a good clue to the actual whereabouts of the photo, national park staff had closed the beach on Monday so the American reality television star could be part of a secret photo shoot.
Hole in the Wall beach is in the Booderee National Park, which is Wreck Bay Aboriginal community land. It's part of Jervis Bay Territory, technically the ACT.
A spokeswoman for Parks Australia, responsible for Commonwealth national parks including Boorderee, refused to answer any questions on the financial details of the beach closure on Monday.
The spokeswoman said the agency were "unable to comment" when asked whether the TV star was responsible for the closure of the beach.
My abortive dash for that shot at stardom
For a fleeting moment Kim Kardashian was within my reach on Monday.
For a few seconds I was going to be the only person with photos of her frolicking in the waters of Jervis Bay.
My phone was going to be ringing off the hook with offers from magazines, offers that would set me up financially forever.
And then those moments vanished into the arms of the determined man stopping me from getting any closer.
The drama began after getting a call to investigate claims the Kardashian crew was at Hole in the Wall near Bristol Point, Jervis Bay.
Now, I have to admit until last week I wasn’t really up on the whole Kardashian thing.
Last week, along with quite possibly most of the males in the known world, I became a little more acquainted with her after she appeared nude on the internet.
I don’t even know why I looked at it and I don’t even know why anyone thinks that’s special anymore. Nude on the internet? Meh. These days I don’t know what to believe on the internet.
Anyway this Jervis Bay sighting was shaping up to be true. There was an unusually large number of people in the area for a Monday and one woman was making sure nobody went any closer to where the alleged Kardashian was supposed to be.
Then before I knew it, with delusions of grandeur, my dash to the Kardashians began.
I sprinted from the crowd and along the beach as fast as I could, spurred on by the cheers and whistles from the group being held back. The group was clearly excited that one of their own had broken ranks and was now speeding toward this unseen goddess on the beach.
As I got closer, with notepad, iPad and camera all flapping around me the inner security team spotted their lively target and knowing I had nowhere else to go began to head off my no doubt impressive run.
Seconds later and exhausted I was stopped. My impending brush with fame came to an abrupt end. And so began the long walk of shame back to the excited crowd who for a fleeting moment were entertained by what must have been a pretty bizarre sight on the beach.
After being scolded for potentially jeopardising this wonderful opportunity for the Shoalhaven and told I’d be spoken to by the Federal Police, I was kindly handed back my freedom and sent on my way.
Little did anyone know, while I was running I was also shooting from the hip and expected I had fluked those very photos that would change my life – and Kim’s.
Once safely back on the road I pulled over and retrieved my memory card from where I had discretely hidden it. Loaded it into the camera and flicked through a disappointing sequence of sky, sand, sky, my leg, sky, the water and so on.
There would be no magazines throwing money my way from this job.
