IAS FLEX MUSCLES IN SCREENING PROGRAM
THE Illawarra Academy of Sport co-ordinated individual athlete musculoskeletal screening over the weekend with physiotherapy partners BaiMed Physiotherapy & Sports Injury Clinic.
About 120 scholarship holders across nine sports programs underwent their individual musculoskeletal screening to identify any movement deficiencies which could hinder performance or increase the risk of injury.
The BaiMed team assessed a range of factors including joint range of motion, muscle strength and flexibility, posture, nerve function, balance and biomechanical alignment.
The academy's general manager, Shannon Fraser, said the process of screening all athletes was generally reserved for state and national programs, and the fact these are now being completed as part of the IAS scholarship reflects the "high standard of pre-elite programs now available within our region".
"The musculoskeletal screenings are an essential component to the athlete's physical development and not only provide crucial movement information but the means to eradicate and identify deficiencies at an early stage," Fraser said.
"Through the generous support of the Illawarra Academy of Sports physiotherapist partner, BaiMed Physiotherapy & Sports Injury Clinic in Wollongong, we are very pleased to be able to again offer this quality service to all 2015 scholarship holders."
The BaiMed team is well known in the Illawarra through its strong affiliation with the St George Illawarra Dragons, NSW Country Rugby Union, the NSW Institute of Sport and other key sporting organisations and teams.
