The Bravo Team Challenge, which combines physical obstacles with boot camp and strategy, was launched in the city on Wednesday.
During the inaugural three-day event, on April 17-19, teams of up to 10 people will join their physical and mental forces to conquer a variety of challenges.
From serious athletes to people of average fitness and even beginners, each day will bring bush, beach and man-made terrain battles that test all abilities.
The goal is to accumulate as many points as possible in the process.
Each team will have a minimum of six people, with organisers calling for "team champions", or leaders, to start rallying their troops.
Team champion and former Australian ironman champion Guy Andrews has spent time in Wollongong "getting a feel" for the event.
Andrews said he'd done plenty of adventure challenges in the past, but Bravo was a "game-changer".
"This is trying to pull people in to do something a little bit different, but within that there's still some familiar aspects," Andrews told the Mercury.
The Gold Coast-based athlete said he'd enter a number of teams across all categories and urged others to start training.
"Any [fitness] goal is important and this is as good as any," he said
"Be prepared and then you can enjoy the event for what it is."
The challenge, which is expected to attract about 2000 participants and deliver more than $1.2 million into the economy, has been designed to attract visitors to Wollongong.
