The work forms part of the council's West Dapto Access Strategy, which has involved building a three-span bridge at Shone Avenue and installing traffic lights at the West Dapto Road-Princes Highway intersection.
It is now planned to build a bridge on West Dapto Road and another on Wongawilli Road, install traffic lights at the Wongawilli Road-Shone Avenue intersection, and widen Wongawilli Road past the intersection to four lanes.
Boom gates will also be installed at the rail crossing.
Shellharbour MP Anna Watson and Throsby MP Stephen Jones were at the site on Friday for a media briefing about the plans.
"The former state and federal Labor government's provided Wollongong City Council with $40 million in total funding since 2010," Ms Watson said.
"This funding has seen the construction of new local road links and bridges at Cleveland Road and Shone Avenue, West Dapto."
Mr Jones said the federal Labor government had provided $14 million of the $40 million to ensure "safer, flood-free access for West Dapto residents".
The release of the designs meant the community could provide feedback before work began, Mr Jones said.
The community can provide feedback on the draft concept plans until December 10.
