Coledale talent Billie Melinz plans to use this weekend's Subway Summer Surf Series event in Kiama as a launching pad in her pursuit of national selection for the World Junior Surfing Championships.
The 15-year-old rising star travelled to Ecuador to compete at the World Titles in the under-16's division and is hopeful of returning to the international scene for a second time.
A strong result on the South Coast would put her in a good position to do so.
She finished second in the Dee Why event on the weekend of September 13-14 to Macy Callaghan but is looking to go one better at her second attempt.
'It was a close final. I was winning the whole time against probably my biggest rival and good friend Macy Callaghan. She got the upper hand but I am hoping to get the upper hand in the competition," Melinz said.
Melinz will have the advantage of local knowledge when she hits the water over the weekend.
"I surf down there a fair bit. I like it down there so try and get down there as much as possible," she said.
A good performance would be the ideal preparation for Melinz ahead of the Australian Junior Surfing Titles in the first week of December.
Solid displays at both events help put forward Melinz case for re-selection for the Australian team.
"I want to go in a couple of [Summer Surf Series events] then I have Aussies' [Championships] so I want to try and get a couple of results and see if they select me again," Melinz said.
Melinz will look to utilise the experience she gained while in Ecuador earlier this year.
After winning her opening heat, she was knocked out of the event in round two.
But the early exit didn't stop her from learning from the experience.
"It was something different. Before that I had only been to Bali so there was a lot of travelling and it was tiring but it was worth it," Melinz said.
"I learnt a lot from it, learnt from mistakes so it turned out well.
"I needed to fix up my heat strategy a bit more and just train harder, get my surfing better and comeback even stronger."
Subway Summer Surf Series winners nationally are invited to attend a three-day "Subway Surf Camp" held at the Hurley Surfing Australia High Performance Centre.
