For some Illawarra families, December 25 lacks the joy often taken for granted by others, according to the Member for Keira, Ryan Park.
Mr Park has launched his second appeal for Christmas toys for children in Wollongong Women's Refuge.
From babies to teenagers, Mr Park has called on the community to rally behind families doing it tough.
"This is really important to me," Mr Park told the Mercury. "As a bloke, I think it helps if you're leading the way and showing an example, particularly in supporting women who have left terrible relationships where they've been exposed to domestic violence."
Mr Park described the delivery of last year's presents as an incredible experience.
"We had carloads worth," he said. "It was probably one of the best days of my political career, going to that refuge ... seeing the staff crying [and] handing over presents to some of the mums there.
"They'll wake up on Christmas Day feeling a little bit better, not great, but a little bit better and hopefully, put a smile on their children's faces, who are real innocent victims in all of this."
Wollongong Women's Refuge recently merged with Warilla Women's Refuge to form Supported Accommodation and Homelessness Services Shoalhaven Illawarra.
The toys will be donated to them and to people using outreach services in the northern suburbs.
Unwrapped presents can be delivered to Mr Park's office at 247 Princes Highway, Corrimal, 9am-5pm until mid-December.
