A woman armed with a weapon was shot by a police officer at Picton on Saturday night.

Officers were called to a house in Colden Street, just one block from the main street of Picton at about 8.20pm following reports of a woman in an agitated state and armed with a weapon, believed to be a knife.
Assistant police commissioner Frank Mennilli said at a press conference on Sunday that officers at the scene had used all available restraint in dealing with the agitated 54-year-old woman.
‘‘One of the police officers used his OC spray to no effect,’’ assistant commissioner Mennilli said.
‘‘Police were in fear of being seriously injured. One of the officers withdrew his firearm and discharged one shot into the female.’’
The bullet hit the 54-year-old woman in the abdomen.
She was treated at the scene by paramedics and taken to Liverpool Hospital in a serious but stable condition.
Police from the Camden Local Area Command closed the street at the intersection with Menangle Street to establish a crime scene has been establish which was due to be examined by specialist forensic officers.
No police officers were injured during the incident.
An independent critical incident team from South-West Metropolitan Region is investigating all the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
This investigation will be overseen by the Professional Standards Command.
