Mr Evans first mentioned the idea for the bridge in June, calling it a "Sea Cliff-style bridge" - albeit one that would follow the rail line and not go out over the water as Stanwell Park residents feared.
Earlier this month, Mr Evans was touting the bridge as the solution to the Illawarra's train timetabling woes by getting rid of two pinch points on the South Coast line - the Stanwell Park viaduct and the Clifton tunnel.
"The two pinch points are the big issue with scheduling in the Illawarra," Mr Evan said last week.
"You've got these two pinch points where you can only have a train in or out because there's only one line, and one tunnel.
"Once you've cleared that and you've got one train in, another train coming out at the same time, scheduling will be a lot easier to manage in the Illawarra."
Mr Evans said it was "work that needs to be done" and it would reduce travel time to Sydney by as much as 15 minutes.
He also said last Friday that the government was looking to fund the bridge.
"It's been on forward estimates and it's going to cost several hundreds of millions of dollars to do it," he said. "It's planned work, the Illawarra upgrade is planned infrastructure."
However, last week ABC Illawarra reported that, after Mr Evans said on air that the bridge was in the government's forward estimates, he called back to say there was no such funding commitment.
NSW Transport Minister Gladys Berejiklian declined to confirm if she was aware of Mr Evans' claims or if the project was on the forward estimates for funding.
Instead, she commended Mr Evans for the work he did for his electorate.
"Lee Evans is a hard-working local member and, of course, I will listen to his feedback and ideas for improvements to the South Coast line," Ms Berejiklian said.
Mr Evans was unavailable for comment.
