More than 150 competitors entered the multi-race event, which included ocean ski, paddle board and stand up paddle board categories. Race director Michael Locke said Wollongong paddlers were well represented among the winners, beating some of the state's best.
"There were a number of classes but the main events were the ski races - men's and women's - which were 18 kilometres," Mr Locke said.
"Mackenzie Hynard took out the open men's and Hannah Minogue - who is also a local girl - took out the open women's, which is a really good result."
Each of the races, including the 14-kilometre stand-up paddle and 18-kilometre ocean canoe events, started at Bulli beach and headed north, before doubling back.
Mr Locke said the warm conditions and lack of wind meant many of the competitors "found it pretty tough going".
The event, the second leg of the NSW Ocean Paddling Series, was set up by Mr Locke in a bid to revive the sport in the Illawarra.
The Bulli Surf Life Saving Club member is among a group of 30-40 keen paddlers from the region who often travel to Sydney or interstate to compete.
He said Saturday's event, and the Illawarra coastline, was well regarded by competitors.
