Australia Business Apprenticeships Centre hosted the barbecue, with regional manager Tony Keir seeing great value in recognising the efforts of apprentice carpenters nationwide.
"Basically today we're celebrating National Carpenters Day. It's a thank-you for what they do and it was really just a way of recognising and thanking them and bringing in the trades from bakery and commercial cookery and celebrating all on site," Mr Keir said.
With trades like carpentry and joinery listed on the National Skills Needs list, head teacher of building and construction at Wollongong TAFE, Richard Twist, believes these trades can be an attractive career path for many.
"Carpentry is a starting point to a very broad range of job prospects. It's a good career for people who like working outside a lot and working with their hands," Mr Twist said.
"There is going to be a trade shortage before too long if we don't keep bringing people into it so it's important for employers to take on apprentices and to invest that back into the industry," he said.
Joinery apprentices at Wollongong TAFE, Ben Buckley and Michael Banovic, see first-hand the importance of trades such as carpentry and joinery.
"We wouldn't be living in many houses without them and I like having a roof over my head," Mr Buckley said.
With the aim of doing his building and construction licence, Mr Banovic wants to become a developer.
