Predictions of sizzling temperatures across the region fizzled on Sunday, with the mercury hitting a mere 25 degrees at Bellambi and 29 at Albion Park - well below the mid-30s expected.
Still, the region's beaches were a popular spot for those wanting to cool off, before an afternoon change swept across the region and did the cooling off for them.
Come 2.30pm, Wollongong played host to a blanket of clouds and light drizzle.
The region's firefighters were kept busy despite the cool change, responding to false reports of fire in Port Kembla, Blackbutt, Shellharbour and Gerringong sparked by an unusually dense sea mist.
It followed a small grass fire at Cachia Boulevard, Horsley, earlier in the afternoon, which was extinguished by one NSW Fire and Rescue unit.
People enjoying the heat should not count on sweltering their way through the week - the Bureau of Meteorology is predicting drops in temperature through to next weekend.
Monday is expected to bring a high of 26 degrees about noon followed by the strong chance of some afternoon thunderstorms.
The temperatures will continue to drop through the week, reaching a low of 19 degrees on Thursday.
The Illawarra could also have showers through to Wednesday.
Nowra will get some relief from the recent 30-degree-plus days. The bureau said the coming days will bring temperatures in low to mid 20s, with rain likely.
