RISING American talent Jarmere Jenkins has conquered Wollongong, and now he has his eyes set on a much larger arena.
Having snuck into the top 200on the ATP male rankings table, the 23-year-old wants a crack at Australia’s greatest tennis tournament.
‘‘Some time in January I’ll play a warm-up tournament, I’m not sure where, then Australian Open qualifiers,’’ Jenkins said when asked of his next assignment.
The 23-year-old took out the Australian Futures tournament at Beaton Park by beating New Zealander Rubin Statham in straight sets on Sunday.
Jenkins won the first set 6-4 but was broken twice in the second as Statham shot out to a 4-0 lead.
The American rallied to fight back with two breaks of his own, then won the set 7-5 to clinch the title.
Jenkins said the key to his comeback was keeping his cool when he was against the ropes.
‘‘The four games that he won I felt like I had a chance, ’’Jenkins said.
‘‘Especially in the first one he served out, I had a break point.
‘‘He kind of picked up his game and changed up his strategy which forced me to raise my game a level and switch up my strategy.
‘‘I knew what I had to do but once he sort of countered that I had to change it up, so I decided to mix up my serves a bit.
‘‘I was a bit worried but I knew once I got the first break that I could get another one.’’
For Jenkins, the win capped off a big eight weeks playing tournaments around Australia.
His tour Down Under has included three Futures victories and another appearance in a final, pocketing close to $15,000 in the process.
His ranking was 280 when he landed in Australia, and yesterday’s victory ensures he will now slip under the 200 mark.
Jenkins’ goal was to be under 200 by Christmas and be in the top 100 male tennis players by 2016.
He will fly back home to the US today and begin preparations for the Australian Open.
