It is understood the announcement was made at a meeting in Wollongong.
No mention was made of staffing cuts and staff hope Nowra-based journalist Ainslie Druitt-Smith will be redeployed.
The cut has come after the ABC was told to trim its budget by 5 per cent across the board.
ABC managing director Mark Scott' said of the five "very small regional radio posts" to go (Wagin, Morwell, Gladstone, Port Augusta and Nowra) the number of staff affected is "minimal and there are no content implications".
"The ABC will always have and need a strong regional footprint," Mr Scott says.
"But we need to be responsible in how we allocate resources and maintaining these sites is not best practice."
Also to go are the weekly state based editions of current affairs show 7.30.
Cuts are also being made to Lateline.
