Craig Penman had suffered a family breakdown and was abusing drugs when his life quickly spiralled out of control.
It took a violent turn on May 1, when he attacked his brother’s car in a drug-fuelled rage.
The 26-year-old took a crowbar to the windscreen and smashed it in three places after his brother refused Penman’s demands to borrow his mobile phone.
The attack was one of nine offences involving Penman in Port Kembla Local Court on Monday.
Others included charges over an incident on April 12, 2013, when Penman and another man were caught by police trespassing on a Mangerton property late at night.
At the time Penman had a large folding knife and torch in his possession.
He was also charged with breaching apprehend violence orders and intimidating his former de facto wife, after he confronted her outside her work and threatened to kill her.
The court heard Penman was suffering from mental and behavioural problems, which likely stemmed from his illicit drug use.
Magistrate Michael Stoddart acknowledged Penman had been admitted to hospital on a number of occasions due to poor mental health, but said his continued use of crystal meth interfered with his anti-psychotic medication.
Mr Stoddart sentenced Penman to one month’s jail for breaching an AVO on October 20 and placed him on a 12-month good behaviour bond for a number of other charges.
Penman will be eligible for release on December 3.
