The southbound lanes between Mount Pleasant and Fern Street were due to be open to traffic from Friday but favourable weather saw the schedule moved forward.
‘‘Motorists will now be able to drive along the new southbound lanes which will improve congestion normally experienced at the southern end of the Kiama bends,’’ Kiama MP Gareth Ward said.
It is expected that the lane openings will have an effect on the holiday traffic congestion at the Kiama bends.
Northbound traffic will continue to use the existing highway.
The entire first stage of the Princes Highway upgrade is expected to be completed in mid-2015.
