Finalists in the The Sydney Music Arts and Culture (SMAC) Awards, presented by FBI Radio, were announced this week.
Among the big names of Sydney's cultural scene are the Wonderwalls street art festival, the Farmer and The Owl music festival, and former Wollongong band The Walking Who.
Wonderwalls, curated by Verb Syndicate, brought internationally renowned street artists to Wollongong last November. Artists transformed drab and boring walls into beautiful, towering works of art, which still brighten up many corners of the city. The festival has been nominated for the "Remix The City" award.
Farmer and The Owl, the festival co-presented by Yours & Owls and Music Farmers, took over the University of Wollongong on November 23 last year. Featuring The Drones, Dappled Cities and more, the festival was the region's biggest indie music event in years. The organisers have announced a new festival on March 14, with more details coming soon, but the 2013 festival is up for "Best Music Event".
Psychedelic rock band The Walking Who made a home in Wollongong, recording much material in a rambling Church Street house. The band has since relocated to Sydney, but they have been nominated for two awards - "Best Song" for single With Roses, and "Best Live Music Act" for their electrifying live show.
Voting for the awards is open, and runs until December 23. Winners will be announced on January 20.
