The Bureau of Meteorology is predicting showers and storms every day to Sunday, giving stormchasers and weather watchers a good chance to catch more dramatic shots of lightning bolts striking over the region and out to sea.
Dozens of lightning strikes were recorded across the Illawarra, with up to 47mm of rain dumped on parts of the region as the storm headed northwards.
Despite the dramatic display, the region’s State Emergency Service received just 15 calls for help, most for leaking roofs and the odd tree down.
‘‘It was probably one of the most impressive storms I’ve seen for quite a while,’’ SES region controller Ashley Sullivan said.
‘‘Perhaps unlucky for the Illawarra, storms are supposed to be continuing on for the rest of the week and they are meant to build in severity.’’
He said often storms were more severe following bright, blue-sky days, which could mean a big Tuesday night for the Illawarra.
A high of 27 degrees is expected today with the mostly sunny morning as showers or a thunderstorm develops in the afternoon and evening.
Mr Sullivan urged anyone in need of assistance due to flood or storm damage to call the SES on 132 500.
