While growing up in Hamelin, the German town best known for the legend of the Pied Piper, Peter Severin noted the regular arrival of aerograms from a faraway land called Australia. Once or twice a year there would be a telephone call between his mother, suddenly speaking in English, and relatives who lived somewhere in that vast brown land.
