In a phone conversation late on Sunday, the man told police he had left the bush and was unhurt.
Wollongong police have yet to speak to the man face-to-face; no charges have yet been laid.
The accident blocked two southbound lanes of the M1 Motorway near Cataract Creek and prompted police to divert light traffic down Bulli Pass for more than two hours, with only heavy vehicles and buses allowed to pass.
Police believe the accident occurred about 5.10pm when a Ford Falcon towing a trailer experienced engine troubles and slowed to speeds of 15-40km/h while in the 100km/h zone.
A van travelling behind the Ford consequently collided with the trailer's rear and rolled onto its side, police said.
Contrary to earlier reports it was the driver of the Ford Falcon, and not the van, who then fled leaving three children and his brother behind.
Police searched surrounding bushland and requested assistance from Polair and the dog unit, however these were not available.
The van driver remains in hospital; the Ford Falcon passenger was treated for soft tissue injury to his neck and back.
The children were uninjured.
